Scope and Contents The owner is not known, but was presumably a resident of Edinburgh (folios 30 verso, 31). Eight printed songs and a fragment of a ninth, all datable to the last decade of the eighteenth century, have been tipped in at folios 62-79, which have been cut down to stubs for the purpose. Folios 80-81 also are cut down, but nothing has been attached to them. A march written apparently in the owner's hand is pasted to folio 80. The owner's incomplete pagination has been ignored. Some music has been written in a later (possibly a child's) hand at folio 20.

Music book of simple treble notation, containing marches, dances and songs, which appears to have been owned successively by Francis and John Hughes, whose names are written at the front and back of the book respectively.

Scope and Contents

Francis Hughes appears to have been the first owner and to have written most of the pieces; a tune apparently entitled 'March y[e] 21:' (folio 16 verso) is described as having been 'Perform:[d] at the Kings Coronation', apparently that of George III, in September 1761. The signature of John Hughes appears inside the back cover, and, dated 1768, at folio i (inverted). Most of the pieces at the back of the volume are religious. The book appears to lack a leaf before folio 1.

Scope and Contents Many of the pieces are unattributed and many of the rest are poems taken from published sources set to music by members of the Cathcart family and their friends. Several pieces are private compositions being inscribed 'not to be given away' or 'not to be copied'.The book was given by Lieutenant-Colonel Cathcart to his wife in 1835, according to inscriptions in her hand inside the front cover and on the first flyleaf. It contains pieces copied by her until about 1840 (folio 113)....
